Hummingbirds, Mountain Hikes and Snow.....

My best friend has been in town for a week. It was great seeing her....there is so much to say and not enough words and time to get everything discussed. Sometimes I wish we could be 12 again and play house. She could forget her life for a moment and we could speak of things that were not important. We hiked up to a waterfall. It was about 4 miles round trip and it was beautiful. My sweet Todd made Dutch Oven Rosemary chicken, then we roasted marshmallows and Starbursts (candy) in the fire pit. The dinner was FABULOUS!!!!!
The blue you see in the very back of the picture is the Great Salt Lake.
I was given a hummingbird feeder by my parents for Mother's Day and last week I hung it up outside my kitchen window. The hummingbirds are coming like crazy. I saw 6 all fighting over the feeder yesterday morning. We also have a large yellow bird sneaking some of the nectar. I have no idea what kind of bird it is so if anyone knows let me know. I have never even seen this bird in my yard before and now he is coming all the time for the hummingbird feeders.
(There is a hummingbird in the first picture if you can find it.)

So my friend from Sandy Utah just called and told me it is snowing and sticking to the ground. I think I will cry. We were so patient with our plants. We started everything from seed in February and we waited an entire week after Mother's Day to plant. I am sick with worry for our 55 tomato plants and 90 or so pepper plants. As I sit here typing I can see the rain switching over to snow right before my eyes. Sniff sniff. I am just hoping it will warm up a bit and switch back to rain soon. I cannot go outside and cover my entire garden. I do not have a large enough tarp. It has rained so much here my basement has flooded twice.... and my heater has been on for 3 days... we are having a slow start to our summer.

You've inspired me to get a hummingbird feeder. I've always wanted one and your pictures are so cool. Thanks.

I love hummingbirds! We're too far north for them here. I hope your tomatoes and garden stay safe!

humming bird feeder are so fun. we have on right outside our breakfast nook and sit there and watch them..plus, they're nosy birds and I think they watch us too. Your little hike sounds wonderful and with a waterfall at the end...perfect! I have lots of friends in Utah and they're all pissed...apparently it's snowing in veriest parts of the state. Hope all works out with your planting.

Hope your garden survives the weather. We have more rain a low temps coming this week. Maybe Spring is giving us a pass this year?

Wow! It's nearly June. How can it still be snowing? We had a flash snow in March a few years ago and all of our hummingbirds died. It was horrible! Your's must be tougher than our southern ones.

when we lived in Antigua we had plenty of Hummingbirds feeding off the hybiscus flowers. People hung up half coconut shells full of sugar & it attracted Bananaquits - they could be your yellow bird ?

Sory about your weather xx

Great pictures!! Makes me want to hang my hummingbird feeder up to see what might come along. :O)

Gosh, snow this time of year. It is so hot and humid down here. Hope your garden comes through ok, and best of luck.

What a nice waterfall to hike to. The views are beautiful.

The Oriole is such a pretty bird and they are nectar eaters too like hummingbirds. With that many hummingbirds and Orioles around you could use a couple feeders. How neat!

Your poor garden! I hope the plants survived. I can't believe that you are still getting snow! It better warm up soon! (I come in less than 2 weeks and don't want cold! lol)

Oh shoot, I hope your tomatoes and peppers survive the weather. Hard to imagine that it's still snowing your way and I hope it was a modest dusting? I bought myself a hummingbird feeder a while back but have been slow putting it up because someone told me they attract a lot of wasps and we had a big problem with them in the past. I would love to see a hummingbird though. Maybe I should chance it?

so i was wondering where you are at in utah? we are in slc. also just a tip for your feeders. the hummers don't care that the nectar is red. I have recently learned that the red dye is harmful to them they can not process it. I make my own and it is really easy. you can find a recipe online. basically sugar and water just figure out the ratio. then put the rest in the fridge. Also the hummers eat insects, I didn't know that til just recently.
