The Great Boob Smashing of 2010 (FYI TMI)!!!

This morning I had a mammogram. My first mammogram.
As I awoke this morning, I wondered, what does one wear to a mammogram? Jeans, sweats, shorts??? I would like to remove the very least amount of clothing I can get away with, so jeans with snaps and zippers may be out of the question. I settle for my favorite tan cotton shorts, a blank tank top, and a snug little jacket. Hair down and I decided no makeup. Maybe I was shooting for the "hurry and take the damn pictures so I can go on a run because I am super healthy" kind of look!
So there I am in a little pink flowered cape, cold as hell and really quite nervous. The though of my girls being squeezed within an inch of their life has really frightened me. Well, they got one side done and the machine broke, so off to another room I went like a boobie superhero in my pink cape. I will be honest. I did NOT hurt. I was surprised though that my 38D's resembles tortillas so painlessly and effortlessly. Boy, the things we girls go though. Not one crevice or fancy part left unexplored by total strangers!

Thanks for the 'mammories'!

Congrats! You're a squished titty virgin no more! You're right, mammograms are not too bad. The only special instructions I ever get is not to put on any underarm deodorant or lotion that morning. Don't want to be slippin' and a-slidin' all over the place!

I love that little cartoon and so appropriate. Thankfully the machines have changed and are not as painful. I had one this year and it is still uncomfortable but what can you expect. Glad you got the deed done. You wear whatever is comfortable to a mammogram since only the top comes off. Hope you have a great day and have a good run. Becca

Did you remember not to wear deodorant? At 34 or 36 B I have gotten pinched before.

Our physician assistant and doctor moved to another practice, and now send us to another site for mammograms. I keep forgetting to call them and take me off of their mailing list. They have me in a "Pink Ladies Mammo Club", or something like that, and each month offer different goofy little things to add clutter to my house if I bring my card in to redeem them. Oh, my! Are you in a club now, too?

You lucky so and so. Apparently the bigger the better with a mammogram. I have just slightly bigger than bee stings and after the tech spending a good few minutes stretching them to fit in the machine I was ready to go home. Very painful experience and not one I'm hoping to repeat any time soon!
Funny how we women plan our outfits even for such appointments. I too did no make up and easy access clothing.

Huh ? how old are you ? they don't start screening here 'til we are fifty ! so I'm not there yet.
38 E here- lots to squash - one of my closest friends is one of the boob Xray ladies.

OMG there is nothing left of me "inside" after they got their scalpals out- but I am here to tell the tale so it was worth it !

Why don't you join the ournal class ?

Penny, I am only 35 but 3 years ago I had a total hysterectomy because I was very ill and filled pre-cancer cells. Yeah for being a woman. ;o)

The equipment is much improved now..used to be fashioned after the Spanish Inquisition. Hurt? Mama Mia!!
Still, they found the beginning of the big C, and I'm a 16 year survivor!!
And why are those rooms always so freezing?
Bless us all...

yay for you and not a lot of pain.
The last time I went, the nurse/practioner who did it for me said something like people with larger cup sizes don't hurt so much...so I guess I feel better that my saggy DDs are good for something! LOL!

Here's to the baseline mammogram. I'm so proud of you.
I still don't like them but I'm not complaining. That big old machine saved my life.
It's a piece of cake compared to having Breast Cancer.
Really funny cartoon....

Melissa - that's you & me both then as I was 33 when I asked for a hysterectomy after years of treatment for pre cancerous cells.
But I have NEVER been offered an early mammogram - you have made me question this.

Perhaps the whole process would change if men had to have their junk checked in the same manner... less like a refrigerator being tipped on your boob while you try to keep a smile on your face.

Yea not really looking forward to this. I am 33 but feel like I should get it done. I have a very close who is also 33, she has had a mastectomy from breast cancer, she has a 3 yr.old and a 5 yr.old. She is awaiting reconstructive surgery but she wants the other breast off and reconstructed as well. It has to be the worst thing when your breasts become your enemies.

I'm getting smaller because I'm losing weight as well, but it always kills me! I remember my first mammogram. The doctor's office called and said they thought they had spotted something and I needed to come in again for another screening. I was eating dinner and almost choked! That was a long time ago and have never had a scare like that since. Good for you, Missy! You have to take care of your boobies!

I got all the 'scare' stories before my first one several years ago. I told the tech about them and she said 'I've heard them all'. lol

I never had a problem either. The exam itself didn't hurt (not a comfortable thing, but it didn't hurt), and I wasn't sore afterwards.

50? A baseline (first mammo) is given at age 40 here. From there it's done every one to two years, until age 50 when it's done yearly.

If there's a family history they start earlier.

I had wondered if larger breasted women didn't have as hard of a time. though my MIL says she hurts terribly after hers.

I am glad it didnt hurt! I think it is the smaller "girls" that maybe find it really painful....
